Strategy: Improve our people's capability in environmental management.

Providing training to our employees is fundamental to the successful implementation and use of the Life Guard HSE management system and to the integration of AGL’s Environmental Principles into our organisational culture. We provide environmental training to employees so that they understand AGL’s approach to environmental management, individual responsibilities, personnel and tools available for assistance, and appropriate action to take in the event of an environmental incident.

During 2008/09, AGL undertook an extensive review of the structure, capability and resourcing of environmental management roles across the Company. The review included:

  • An external benchmarking exercise, to assess our comparative performance against similar organisations;
  • An internal high-level risk assessment, to assess whether we are adequately addressing our material environmental risks; and
  • A gap analysis of environmental management in addressing material environmental risk across the business.

The review identified the need for AGL to restructure and increase resourcing in environmental management roles across the business. In particular, more resources will be provided to the Upstream Gas, Merchant Energy and Corporate business groups. The implementation of the key findings of the review has commenced, and will continue to be embedded in the business during 2009/10.

To further build on the work completed during the restructure of the Environment Team, we need to look further across the business at the training we provide to our people in environmental management.  During 2009/10 a review of corporate environmental management training programs will be undertaken.

In 2007/08 we focused our attention on providing HSE management system training to people across the business, resulting in an average of 2.2 hours of environmental training undertaken per person. In 2008/09 we achieved 0.46 hours of training per person (on a head count basis).

The reduction in average training hours reflects that many of our employees had completed HSE management system training in 2007/08.  The approach in 2008/09 was to maintain management systems training for new starters and those with identified management systems training needs.
