Goal: Connect our business and employees with the community in ways which make a genuine contribution, engage our people and strengthen our business.

The success of AGL is shaped and measured not only by the financial outcomes of what we do, but by the social and environmental impact our decisions and actions have on the wider community.

Our strategies to meet our community goal are:

This section of the report focuses on our approach to community consultation for our development projects as well as our Energy for Life program.

Energy for Life

For the past six years, AGL’s Energy for Life program has aimed to make a contribution to the communities in which we live and work.

Energy for Life’s core social cause is homelessness and this focus is reflected across the four initiatives - Employee Volunteering, Employee Giving, Energy Matters and AGL Warmth in Winter.

As an energy company, AGL is committed to encouraging energy efficiency across the community.  We also place a special emphasis on helping vulnerable Australians to reduce their energy costs.

Energy for Life acknowledges that our skills, expertise and energy can make a real contribution towards alleviating hardship and improving the lives of others.

A network of Energy for Life Champions, who motivate their teams to get involved in Energy for Life initiatives, supports the delivery of AGL’s Energy for Life program.

During 2008/09, AGL utilised the expertise of the Safety, Sustainability and Corporate Responsibility Board Committee to identify opportunities to improve the outcomes and impacts of the Energy for Life program.  AGL undertook a review of the charities and causes supported through Energy for Life to assess whether the program continues to reflect the interests of our employees. The review comprised:

  • Completing a detailed analysis of support provided through the Employee Giving initiative;
  • Undertaking a quantitative employee survey; and
  • Conducting nine focus groups with employees across AGL’s major sites covering all employee levels.

The outcomes of the review were presented to the Safety, Sustainability and Corporate Responsibility Board Committee in September 2009, with implementation of the recommendations commencing during 2009/10.
